Corrections policy

We will get things wrong. What matters is what happens next.

Our commitment

When we publish something inaccurate, misleading or out of date, we correct it promptly and visibly. We do not quietly delete errors, and we do not rewrite history.

How corrections are handled

• Factual error. Corrected as soon as it is confirmed. A dated correction note is added to the article explaining what was wrong and what changed.
• Material change in the evidence. The article is updated and an update note records the date and the substance of the change.
• Minor fixes. Typographical and formatting fixes that do not change meaning are made without a note.
• Serious errors. Where an error could have affected a health decision, the correction is placed at the top of the article, not in a footnote.
• Unfixable content. If a piece cannot be made accurate, it is withdrawn and replaced with an explanation rather than silently removed.

Reporting an error

We are still setting up a monitored contact address and do not want to publish one that nobody is reading. It will appear on our contact page before the site opens to readers, and this policy will apply from the first day it is live.

Who decides

Correction decisions are editorial. A commercial partner, advertiser or affiliate has no role in whether a correction is made — see our editorial standards.
